Read the book Portrait of a Burger as a Young Calf by Peter Lovenheim. I read it years ago and loved it, in part because it's a well-written piece of journalism set in Upstate NY and because I'm a vegetarian who grew up around cows.

Correction: I'm a pseudo-vegetarian who never eats red meat and rarely eats chicken.

Rebecca: as a journalism major living Upstate, I think you'll enjoy.
