There are a lot of things I want to accomplish in 2010. I originally posted my goals on January 5th but I’ve come up with three more very important missions:
- Become a vegetarian (which I started on January 12th)
- Become a runner
- My secret for now (I need to get a few things figured out before I announce it on the blog)
My running goal is the topic I’d like to discuss today. I have never been good at running. I can dance, I can spin, I can do yoga, and spend hours on the crossramp or the elliptical. I can even sweat it out to level 2 of the 30 Day Shred but I’ve always had trouble with running. I hated gym classes in high school because they made me run laps. I quit a girl scout canoeing team because it required me to run as a warm up. I am not a runner-but I want to be.
So, I am setting a deadline for myself. I want to be able to run outside by May. I know setting this goal will push me to accomplish it. That being said, I will be running on the treadmill at my gym for the next couple months gaining speed and endurance. I’ve slowly started to transition from the crossramp to the treadmill. I walked/ran for 25 minutes yesterday at the gym. I am starting off very slow. I started my blog last May to motivate myself to lose weight. I figure that May is an appropriate deadline because it is my blog’s 1st birthday!
Any runners with advice on ANYTHING about running, feel free to leave a comment. Just like I said in my vegetarian post, I need all the advice I can get! I’ll also be adding an additional page up top (like the Vegetarian February one) to track my progress. I am confident I can do this and that’s all that matters.
MOVING ON
Thursday morning started with the first bowl of banana oats I’ve had since I’ve been home. I really don’t know what took me so long!

1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup vanilla soy milk, 1/2 banana, Tsp Cinnamon, Spoon of Monkey Boy PB, Dark Chocolate Chips
Perfect!
Lunch was Puck inspired
With fruits & veggies of course!
Grapes, Baby Carrots, Celery, and an Arnold Select Sandwich Thin. Yum!
An hour or so later, I devoured 2 bowls of Peanut Butter Puffins
These are sooooooooooooooooo dangerous!
Then it was off to the mall! I needed to find jeans that fit me since all of my old ones are humongous on me now. I can pull them up without unbuttoning or unzipping them and then not even a belt can hold them up. Even the jeans that I bought a couple months ago to replace my old ones are too big on me now. UGH. Losing weight is expensive! Although I did get a pretty awesome deal at Express.
As I was leaving the mall, I stopped by the Borders Cafe and got the most delicious iced coffee! I didn’t take a picture but it was basically an iced coffee with 1 pump of vanilla syrup and vanilla soy milk. Just thinking about it is making me want one!
After Borders, I went to my 4:15 Narrative Journalism class, which was fantastic! I love the professor and can tell I’m going to love the class!
When I got home, I snacked on this:
And then I did some yoga! I love my new DVD so much!
After laying in child’s pose for a million years, I got to work on dinner.
Check me out! Notice the pilaf all over the stove. Yeah, I’m a messy person.
I mixed a packet of Kashi Pilaf with bite-size pieces of leftover butternut squash from Wednesday night.
I added a little extra brown sugar, cinnamon, and wildflower honey to the mix
We had broccoli on the side
I liked this dinner a lot! It was a great way to use leftovers.
I rounded out the night with a piece of Zucchini Bread topped with PB and Dark Chocolate Chips
And a cup of Tazo Berryblossom White Tea.
What is your favorite food movie?
I bought Food, Inc at the video store this morning. I was just going to rent it but the lady working was really nice and offered me a used one for a really low price (with a lifetime guarantee!) It’s such a good movie! I don’t mind owning it one bit!
Have a great Friday! (HAPPY FRIDAYYY!!)

Your may goal is very reasonable. I am certain though you can become a runner much sooner than that
My advice is to get outside and run as soon as possible. Treadmill running is fine but you won’t get the full effect of running in the outdoors. I run way faster outside than I do in the gym, but I feel fatigued much quicker on the treadmill. Probably just mental for me. I read out of Runner’s Magazine that you can officially call yourself a “runner” if you are able to run 1 mile in a 10 minutes or less. But really, anybody who consistantly gets out there and runs 3 or more times a week is a runner in my book whether you run 10min miles or not. Good luck!
Oh this just reminded me how much I heart zucchini bread!!! I’m going to have to work that into my baking in the next few weeks…
I love the Couch 2 5k program for new runners! It’s awesome!
Hi Aunt Rebecca!
Maybe http://www.dailymile.com/ can help with your running goal – maybe tracking your progress will help keep you motivated. Good luck!
Thanks Nicholas!! <3
Get fitted for proper shoes. It will make it so much easier and prevent injuries.
The thing about running I would say would be find your own pace. It’s so easy once you get into a groove, you won’t want to stop. but if you go too fast you’ll be too winded to really enjoy it. It takes trial and error, but once you find your speed you’ll love it
I love this post and your goals! I was a runner years ago (I ran the Honolulu marathon and then stopped running and had 3 daughters) and would love to be able to run again and it’s one of my secret goals. You’ve inspired me to start!
I have SO many favourite movies – I can’t pick just one. I thought Food Inc. was okay, but a lot of the info in the movie I had heard/ read before. I liked Supersize Me more!! I haven’t eaten McDonalds (not even a fry) since that movie came out!
Rebecca you look HOTT stirring that pilaf!!!
Haha I LOVE Lyod’s honey… Try his spun/whipped cinnamon- it’s to die for! (Troy market, I miss you!)
You’re reminding me of how much I miss zuccini bread. Yum!!

Start slow. Overdoing it can be discouraging, start slow, keep at it, and before you know it you’re addicted to running!
probably a repeat of a bunch of things, but definitely get properly fitted for running shoes at a store that watches you in motion…starting out in the right shoes makes a huge difference. i’ve heard tons of good things about couch to 5k so definitely look into it. run/walking is a great way to get started – http://www.jeffgalloway.com. don’t get discouraged about speed or distance or how long you actually run…every little bit counts! also, once you get into things, remember not to increase your speed or weekly mileage too quickly. a lot of ppl forget this and end up with not fun injuries and discomfort! happy running
I find Mandi’s advice to be very inspiring. Thank you, Mandi.
I’m also popping on here to tell you that I bought chocolate chips for my oatmeal last week because of you. You’re always posting these scrumptious photos of bowls brimming with chocolate chip banana oats…
Thank you, Heidi
