Why It’s OK To Not Blog Every Day

Happy September Blogfaces!!! Welcome to one of my favorite months of the year! We have a lot to discuss, so let’s get on that, shall we?

Basically, the past couple days have looked like this:

Now, there are a few things about the above situation that I want to talk about:

Yes, I am taking four reading/writing-intensive classes.

Yes, I also have a part-time job, and am a freelance writer for the local paper.

Yes, I will have A LOT of work to do.

Yes, I am going to keep blogging regardless. To ensure that I will keep posting throughout the semester, I have also registered to receive independent study credits for my blog. In the past, I’ve gotten swamped with school work, and haven’t been able to keep up with posting. Now, blogging is part of my school work.

NO, I will not apologize when I miss a day or two of posting. You guys don’t want to hear it, and I don’t want to make excuses. Since, as I said above, I will be receiving credit for my blog, I am obligated (and want to) continue posting on a regular basis. BUT, on some days, when I’m overwhelmed with school work, I simply won’t have the time to blog. That said, there will be no post intros that sound like this: ‘Sorry I haven’t posted in a few days, but blah, complain, blah, complain, blah…’  To be quite honest (which I hope you will appreciate), I’m not sorry! Sometimes life gets crazy, and I am a real person. I hope you know that my blog and blog readers are very important to me, and you understand and continue reading… 🙂

If anything, my blog will be an example of how to maintain a blog while living a totally hectic life. Thoughts?

Before I update you on the craziness of the past two days, I’d like to introduce you to this sandwich:

Bread Basket

Quite Possibly the Best. Sandwich. Ever. Not kidding. I love getting lunch at bakeries.

Bread Basket 2

The beaut above is called the Spit & Spat Special and is made with hummus, roasted reds, sprouts, sliced avocado, and cucumbers on the bakery’s high fiber five-seed bread. Oh. My. Yum. Definitely the sandwich of my dreams. If you live anywhere near Saratoga, please, PLEASE check out The Bread Basket. You won’t be disappointed. Promise.

  • You may have missed it on Twitter, but I CAN RUN AGAIN!! The doctor prescribed it. He said, “Rebecca, the only thing that you can to to solve all of the problems in your life is to RUN. Run like you’ve never run before.” OK- he didn’t say that. But, the point is, I can run again! If you’re new to the blog, you might not know that I have ankle tendonitis. I haven’t been able to run, or do much of anything since the beginning of July. (I also have bicep tendonitis. So, no body pump either.) On Monday, my doctor watched me run on the treadmill, and concluded that I have a weakness in my right hip, which is causing me to land weird on my right foot when I run. He gave me a bunch of exercises to do to strengthen it, and also gave me some tips for when I start running again (Yippee!!)
  • I have an appointment with the breast surgeon on September 8th. After reading a comment on my As You Read This post, I’ve decided to insist on getting a biopsy. I hear that it hurts and leaves a scar, but it’s something I have to do to finally clear my mind of this whole situation. I might even ask to have the fibroadenoma surgically removed, but that’s a decision for another time. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated

Finally, here are the classes I’m taking this fall (my last semester!!!):

  • Media Ethics (love the professor!!!)
  • Investigative Reporting (Same professor as above!)
  • E-zine Workshop: Writing and Packaging Stories for the Web (This class is going to be amazing for my blog!)
  • Studies in Non-fiction Prose: Captivity Narratives
  • My blog!

Whew! Now that the blog housekeeping is done, please head over to Christie’s blog to read my guest post about how to stay positive while dealing with a running injury!

Also, Jeff and I will celebrate our five year anniversary this month! Get ready for a sappy love post on the 16th!

The. End.

Have a great Wednesday! <3

  1. As someone who also has a hectic life, I 100% understand. There are already enough pressures in life. Why make something you ENJOY doing become another source of anxiety? I blog when I have the time and when I have something to say. I stopped apologizing for not blogging a long time ago. We’re all busy people. Devoted readers will always come back to you. If anything, I find it makes your posts more in-demand. Kind of like a Quentin Tarantino movie. Keep up the good work, Rebecca. You’re already way more ambitious than most people.

  2. That food is making my mouth water and I currently have no food and no money because I left my wallet at home. Thanks 😛

Good luck with your classes… we’ll pick a day in the near future to meet up for dinner or lunch 🙂

  3. What a great idea to register to get credits from your blog! I wish I’d thought of that last year when I was interning + freelacning + full-time course load + training for a half-marathon. I get dizzy just THINKING about how busy I was my last 2 semesters of school!

Have a great semester. Media Ethics is definitely an interesting class (at least mine was!)

  4. It drives me crazy when a blog post starts with an apology for not blogging. I don’t mind when a blogger takes a few days off–even a week–but I hate the apology.

Equally as annoying: A post that is essentially, “I’m so busy right now but let me show you what I ate before I go okay bye.” I’d rather the blogger just take the day/afternoon off.

In both of those instances, it feels like the readers’ fault that the blogger is busy or overwhelmed. So in short, I like your plan!

  5. Blog as your busy life allows! Good luck with your Dr. appointment next Wednesday. I had a breast biopsy and the scar fades if not disappears. Stay as positive as possible!

  6. Hooray you can run again!! I’m so glad! perhaps that’ll be a good outlet when you have free time… or such that it is 🙂

I’m glad you’re going to see a breast surgeon. from a nurses perspective, I think you should get a second opinon and a biopsy is a wonderful thing, if nothing more than to put your mind at rest, because what if it is something more you never know. at least you know you’ve got a nurse friend to tweet to 🙂 haha!

    good luck with school!

  7. I’m so glad you’re running again, you must be so happy!

As for frequency of blogging. I’m a big fan of a blogger writing when she has something to say, not just tossing something up to get a post out. So keep doing what you’re doing….write when you have something to say! We’re here, anxious to read it!

  8. Just popped over from Christie’s blog and am happy I did. I really enjoy your non-apologetic stance to not posting every day. Really, there’s no need to apologize for having a life outside of your blog, and I love that you are focusing on balance. I’d rather see fewer posts with better content and more heart. I look forward to following!

  9. As someone who blogs once a week, I love this. (Damn African internet!) But really, I do. Blogs are supposed to be something that we enjoy, and a way to share part of ourselves with others. When people are like “sorry I have been MIA” or “bet you were wondering where I disappeared to…” no. I have a life outside of reading your blog. I would rather people post when they want, this IS supposed to be fun after all!

I would love to hear about the stretches that your doc recommended!!! I have a weak right hip too and it has been killing me lately, I had to take two weeks off of running for the first time this year and am still a little nervous about starting again. I don´t want to make it worse 🙁

  10. Ah! The Bread Basket is one of my favorites.. we need to meet up soon! There is so much good food in Saratoga!! What a great schedule.. I’m glad you like your teachers!
