I’m actually sitting in Odd’s drinking a blackberry iced tea as I type this post.  I’m sure it’s no surprise to you that I lived in coffee shops all weekend.  Jeff had events to attend both Saturday and Sunday so I was on my own all weekend.  Basically the past couple days have looked like this:

Sleep. Coffee.  Eat.  Exercise. Coffee.  Eat.  Blog.  Coffee.  Eat.  Sleep.

Oh, and drink smoothies.


I think I threw my whole kitchen into the blender. In the mix:

  • Frozen Butternut Squash
  • Frozen Berries
  • Banana
  • Vanilla Yogurt
  • Whole Milk
  • Peanut Butter
  • Flax Seed Meal
  • Coconut
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Spinach
  • Oats

A few of you have asked about the addition of butternut squash to my smoothies, so here’s the deal: you can barely taste it but it makes the texture SO creamy. Plus it’s frozen so it’s a great veggie alternative to ice. Super healthy and super sneaky. Do it! I promise you’ll love it.

I gulped that down Friday afternoon after I busted out Level One of Jillian’s 30-Day-Shred. In case you missed it, I’m adding Jillian’s DVD to my workout routine because I’ve packed on a few extra pounds and I’ve done it before and know that it works!  Instead of doing 30 days in a row, I’m doing it three times a week and mixing in spinning and yoga classes.  Friday was probably my ninth time doing it (I’ve been bad about keeping track) so I plan to move on to Level Two next week (there are three levels- the idea is to do each level for 10 days before progressing to the next one)

A few weeks ago, I sent out this tweet:

Well, guess what?  My first time doing it again was REALLY hard!  Let me just warn you, whether it’s your first time doing it or you’re just getting back into it, Jillian does not kid around. I mean, the first strength move is push-ups, which I hate just a little bit less than burpees. BUT while I was doing it on Friday I noticed that it didn’t seem as hard anymore. Don’t get me wrong- it’s still a killer workout, but I wasn’t completely dying during it and I didn’t have to take any breaks.  I felt stronger. I know this is an older workout DVD but I definitely recommend it because it works!  I took pictures before starting this workout routine a few weeks ago and we’ll see if I’m brave enough to share them in a month or two.

Have Patience With All Things, But, First of All, With Yourself.

I’m constantly reminding myself to be patient with weight loss, which is hard for me because I’m not a very patient person.  It’s especially frustrating for me because I lost 30 pounds when I started this blog in 2009 and I guess I forgot how hard it is, both physically and mentally.  I want to be honest you: I’m back to the weight I was before I started this blog.  I also want to admit I think I was a little too skinny when I lost weight the first time around. This time, while I’m definitely aiming to get back to a healthy weight, my main goal is to feel strong and fit.

So along with being painfully impatient, I’m trying to keep off the scale and focus more on how I feel and how my clothes fit.  I was frustrated a few days ago because, after working out consistently for the past several weeks, the scale told me my weight hadn’t budged a  bit.  At the same time, however, my clothes fit better and I feel more  fit. I notice more definition in my muscles and feel stronger in general.

I’m trying to not get discouraged when I don’t see results right away. I’ve done 16 bicycle crunches. Where is my six-pack?  I’m trying to focus more on celebrating my gains, like the fact that I can do push-ups now without my arms feeling like they’re going to break off and that I can complete a spin class without feeling like I’m never going to be able to breathe again.  I’m also trying not to be too hard on myself. I mean, I did  undergo hip surgery not too long ago and working out just isn’t what it used to be.

I also know that a big part of losing weight is diet and I’ve been focusing on that too, although it might not seem like it with all the french fry sandwiches and humongous veggie burgers I’ve been posting lately.  I truly believe in the 80/20 rule for healthy eating.  In fact, I feel like my diet is more 90/10.  I eat a super healthy diet 90 percent of the time and splurge 10 percent of the time.  I’ve been watching my portion sizes and incorporating more fruits and veggies into my daily meals (Hello Butternut Squash Smoothie!). I’ve also been cooking a lot more at home.  When I first started this blog, I posted three times a day and documented everything I ate. I can’t even imagine doing that now. So what you see on my blog and Instagram are snippets, not the full story.

I don’t know why I feel compelled to explain my diet, but I do.  I feared when writing this post that people would think, well of course she’s not losing weight, look at what she eats.  As I’m typing this out now though I know that’s completely ridiculous. My diet is so much healthier than it’s ever been and I’m not ashamed of it.  The thing I love most about blogging and the blogging community is that I truly feel like I can open up when I write here.   It also keeps me accountable and inspires me, which is why I started blogging in the first place.

So, all that said, I know I’m getting somewhere; it’s just going to take a bit more time.  I’ve done it before and I know I can do it again.

This post went completely off topic from what I was going to talk about today.  Sometimes that just happens when I start writing and I’m ok with that.

  1. Happy Almost Birthday!! That “B”LT looks great 🙂 I’m still working on my weight. I have already said, I have the opposite problem. my Scale goes down, but my clothes don’t fit any differently. I’m gaining more muscles, so thats encouraging!

  2. So this squash business. It sounds like a great way to add some veggies. I usually use bananas to make my smoothies creamy. But I will eat bananas plain on their own. Butternut squash, however, I’m not as likely to eat on its own.

    Do you cook it first I presume? Do you cook like normal in the oven & then cube it? Or do you buy it pre-cut from the store & then freeze?

    1. Hey Jessie! I buy it from the frozen veggie section of my grocery store! But you could probably cook it in the oven, cube it and then freeze it and get the same result! Let me know if you try it!

I am the worst at being patient with weight loss. Thank you for the reminder. Blogging helps keep me accountable for my weight loss goals.   4. Butternut squash would TOTALLY be an awesome smoothie addition! I’ve also heard sweet potatoes are delicious. I’m currently on a break from smoothies, but once I return, I’ll be throwing those in.

    I’m totally with you with the weight thing. I’m trying hard to work out consistently, eat healthy, and lose weight and it’s flipping HARD. I’m not one of those people who can cut food groups, or do things like Whole 30 in order to lose weight. I need to have some treats (not tons, but a few) in the mix otherwise I’ll OD on fried food (because it’s delicious!).

    1. Mmm Sweet Potato Avocado Smoothie. I feel like I’d probably like a lot of baby food considering how much mush I like eating.
      I can’t cut out food groups either– well except meat because I’m veg. but I don’t believe in sacrificing foods you love for a diet!

  5. If you are seeing a difference in your clothes, it sounds like you are making progress! Don’t get hung up on that number. 😉 And keep doing the Shred. That is a goooooooooood workout! It stands the test of time! I still recommend it to people when they ask me how to start strength training!

    And I get why you explain how you eat – our blogs are NEVER the full story! 🙂

    1. Oh, I’ve heard that adding tofu makes smoothies super creamy but, to be honest, the thought of it grosses me out just a little bit. haha And I agree, gaining wait definitely is more fun than losing it! ALL the pizza!
